I grew up in the north by the great frozen sea
Near the land full of snowmen and peppermint trees
It was tough for a reindeer in ‘72
The snow fell for days and it buried our food
He found me up there on the brink of starvation
Said I should come to his reindeer plantation
So I got up slow and I followed him home
And the rest is a story that’s seldom been told

From the back of this Santa Claus sleigh
When I walked in to town I did not know a soul
When this reindeer walked up with his nose all aglow
He showed me the town and we had a few drinks
The next thing you knew we were flying, so high

Then one Christmas Eve old Rudolf took sick
Got bit on the nose by an angry deer tick
As he laid in the shade of a peppermint tree
Santa said “Blitzen, it’s your turn to lead”
Then the elves gathered ‘round with a light that was red
And they tied that red light to the top of my head
I don’t know if I’m ready, I don’t know if I’m strong
But if Christmas needs saving then we must moving on

It was a cold December morning when I lost my way
A Christmas snow was blowin’ cross Canadian plains
The snow was falling sideways like it had someplace to go
I was going home but lost in the snow
It was a whiteout Christmas
On that Christmas day
On top of Maggie’s saddle we circled for hours
I dreamt of fields of summer of rivers and blooming flowers
Then a light it burst before me in a the curtain of white
Like an angel in a blizzard or some Christmas light
It was a whiteout Christmas
On that Christmas night
That light it led us forward for miles and for miles
Just like a wise man in the desert in search of the holy child
Then I smelled the smell of cedar it was burning inside
As I saw our house approaching the light flickered and died
I walked right through the doorway and mother was there
Her face it turned to summer as she rose from her chair
The tears still hung suspended on tops of her eyes
She said I’ve been praying for hours that you’d be alright
She said I’ve been praying for hours that you’d see the light
It was a whiteout Christmas
On that Christmas night
